Visual Stress Colour Selection Tool
Sunday, January 11th, 2009 | Visual Stress
Visual stress describes the discomfort some people feel when viewing text for long periods. Symptoms vary, but can include headaches and migraines (especially when working at the computer), eyestrain, and words or letters appearing to “jump” or move on the page.
The work of Dr. Arnold Wilkins of the University of Essex has explored the role of colour in the treatment of visual stress. His research suggests that many people will read more comfortably and fluently when the background colour of the text has been optimized.
Currently, the selection of the optimal reading colour involves the use of a proprietary hardware device. The Visual Stress Colour Selection Tool is a prototype online test that can be used to select the optimal background colour for reading online. The tool generates a CSS file that can be used to override the background colour on Web documents.
